Mayor Tan Sri Ahmad Phesal Talib said that City Hall will be providing additional robes for visitors.
“The robes are to ensure that tourists are decently dressed when visiting the National Mosque, as a sign of respect.
“It is the same when they visit other places of worship,” he told reporters at the National Mosque today morning.
City Hall’s Tourism Department has sponsored 65 dark purple robes for Muslims and 130 light purple robes for non-Muslims at a cost of RM19,260.
Phesal said that the different colours were to differentiate between Muslims and non-Muslims.
“The robes are to ensure that visitors are comfortable and have access to the halls when visiting the mosque,” he said.
Phesal said that City Hall will continue to promote the mosque as a must-visit destination for tourists.
He said that in 2014, it attracted more than 500,000 tourists.
“Visits to places of worship have become popular and are growing at a rapid pace.
“Many countries have started to promote their places of worship as tourist attractions.
“Our mosques have the potential to attract many tourists,” he said, adding that the National Mosque was part of the Kuala Lumpur Heritage Trail.
Phesal also said that City Hall was looking into ways to enhance and improve the landscape there.
“We are in the middle of uprgading the park at the entrance. We want to showcase the unique architecture here,” he said.
Phesal also said that City Hall was looking into lighting up the city to promote night tourism.
“We are looking at lighting up parts of the mosque.
“We are discussing with Tenaga Nasional to reduce the electricity tariffs from 28 sen to 13 sen for the mosque and selected places in city,” he said.
Phesal also said that City Hall has suggested the mosque staff or volunteers escort tourists when they visit.
“The role of the volunteers is to explain to the visitors the beauty of mosque.
“We are also look into providing reading materials on Islam for visitors,” he said.
