Gerakan: Land for non-Muslim religions an old story

State government accused of trying to hoodwink younger generation

GEORGE TOWN: Penang Gerakan called on the state government to stop politicising religion by giving the impression that land was being provided for the first time to non-Muslims as places of worship.
The party’s state secretary, Oh Tong Keong, ticked off the state government for trying to gain political mileage by “cooking up an old story” to hoodwink the younger generation into believing that it was being done for the first time.
Media reports have said the state government planned to alienate lands for non-Muslims to build their places of worship.
Oh said land alienation for religious purposes was nothing new as it has been done before when the state government was run by the Barisan Nasional.
He said it was regrettable that Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng had used religion to score political points, pointing out that it was the responsibility of the state government to protect and preserve freedom of religion in the state, and not to do otherwise.
“Religion should not be politicised for it can cause dire consequences in our multi-racial and multi-religious society,” said Oh.
He said the BN had previously alienated parcels of land both in Bayan Baru and Seberang Jaya for various religious bodies to have their own buildings.
About 10 acres of land was set aside in Seberang Jaya to build Sikh, Hindu, Siamese, Chinese, Buddhist and Christian places of worship.
However, he said, in early 2013 the current state government had demolished a Chinese temple to the Goddess of Mazu in Pulau Jerejak immediately after an Umno assemblyman had said that an abandoned government building had been turned into a temple on the island.
“Without giving consideration under any circumstances to legalise it, the state government demolished all the illegal structures of the said temple during Christmas season. At that time, many people questioned whether action was taken out of fear as well as to flatter the Muslims,” said Oh.
