KUALA LUMPUR: DAP will officially ask the government to explain its decision to stop Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua from travelling abroad.
Gobind Singh Deo, who heads DAP’s Legal Bureau, told reporters today that he would send an official letter to the government by Monday and then seek a court decision on the validity of the ban.
Yesterday, immigration officials at KLIA2 prevented Pua from leaving the country as he was about to board a flight to Indonesia.
Gobind said the officials did not specify the reason for their action except to say they were obeying instructions from someone “higher up”.
“We want to know who gave the order,” he said.
“I will write officially to the government for that purpose tomorrow or on Monday and after that we will take it to court and ask the court to give us a decision on whether or not the order was proper.”
He said the issue was of “general public importance,” adding that the government had no right to stop someone from leaving the country without reason.
“Are the police currently investigating Tony Pua?” he asked.
Gobind urged the Inspector-General of Police, Khalid Abu Bakar, “to stop playing games” and name the opposition leader said to have been involved in the alleged tampering of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) data.
“I want to ask the IGP, who is the MP? If you want to question our MPs, tell me. I will bring them to you.”
Recently, in a series of two video recordings, former Sarawak Tribune journalist Lester Melanyi accused the administrators of the Sarawak Report blog of altering data on 1MDB before publishing reports that implicated Prime Minister Najib Razak in alleged wrongdoings. Melanyi also said PKR Secretary-General Rafizi Ramli had a hand in the data tampering.
