Gov’t offices will surely bar Ibans in traditional dress too

DAP’s Teresa Kok remarks how the current dress code goes against traditional costumes that don’t always cover the “aurat”.

PETALING JAYA: The strict dress code being observed in government offices and public places will mean that Ibans, the natives of East Malaysia, will be barred from entering if they are wearing their traditional costumes, said DAP’s Teresa Kok.
In a Facebook posting last night, Teresa, who is also the MP for Seputeh, remarked how fascinated she was at the traditional costumes of Iban males who attended a special service to celebrate the harvest festivals of Gawai and Kaamatan at the Church of Divine Mercy in Shah Alam.
“I was fascinated by the costumes of the Iban males that left them half naked or without covering their “aurat”, so to speak.”
She added, “Those wearing these traditional Iban costumes would surely be barred from entering government offices with the Public Service dress code observed today.”
To hit home her point, she posted another news report this morning about an elderly couple denied entry into the Ipoh City Council simply because they were wearing Bermuda shorts.
Referring to the article that appeared in the Malay Mail Online, she wrote: A security guard at the Ipoh City Council had told 68-year-old Huang Zheng Zhou and his sister, Xia Nv, that their shorts ended above the knee.
“Another woman, 49-year-old Chen Mei Lan, was initially also stopped from entering the building, even though her hemline went past the knee, as her blouse was deemed see-through.”
Netizens, just as distressed as she was over this latest incident also chimed in with their protests with Henry Kon saying, “For goodness sake plse can the PM step in to address this stupid ruling once & for all.”
Teresa received brickbats however for her earlier post about the Iban’s traditional dress with many pointing out that nobody in their right mind would wear such costumes to the office.
Aleey Andro said, “Motif nak kaitkan pakaian iban masuk office.??? Soalan saya :: pernah nampak mana2 ker sesiapa masuk pejabat pakai pakaian sebegini (selain persembahan kebudayaan)????
(What is the motive to link the traditional dress of Ibans with entering an office environment? This is my question: have you ever seen anyone going to government offices in traditional (Iban) garb (except when attending a cultural event)?”
Alwi Adam EzazWealth meanwhile said, “Nampak sangat tak kenal org Sarawak. Org Iban dah tak pakai pakaian macam ni untuk aktiviti seharian. Ini pakaian tradisi. Teresa ingat org Iban mundur sangat ker? Dah majulah”
(It’s obvious you don’t know Sarawakians. The Ibans do not wear these costumes on a daily basis. These are traditional wear. Does Teresa think the Ibans are so backward? They’re advanced lah.”
