Mat Sabu: KL folk look down on PAS now

Loss of Nik Aziz and domination of ulama in party leadership causing loss of support

KUALA LUMPUR: People in the capital now look down upon PAS because of its conservative ulama-dominated leadership, according to defeated deputy president Mohamed Sabu, who leads a progressive faction seeking to form a new party as an alternative to PAS.
In a media interview, he said the party had lost its former appeal to non-Muslims and Malay professionals.
“PAS is beyond repair for the non-Muslims and professional. They look down on PAS now. (The) non-Muslims and civil society, especially in Kuala Lumpur,” said Mat Sabu.
The party was living out its final days and was “beyond repair” because of its decision to end working relationships with the DAP and its campaign to enforce hudud criminal penalties in Kelantan.
Mat Sabu is among 18 PAS leaders who were ousted by a sweep of ulama-backed candidates at the party elections last month.
He said the party would see no changes for another five years because of ulama domination of the powerful Shura Council, which has a five-year term. “PAS will never change. No need for us to repent and come back or anything,” Mat Sabu told the Malay Mail Online.
The progressive group, which includes Shah Alam MP Khalid Samad, Parit Buntar MP Mujahid Rawa and former Kuala Selangor MP Dzulkefly Ahmad, have since begun moves towards setting up a new political party.
He said the conservatives in the party had fallen for Umno’s overtures for political cooperation, which had been successful in destroying party unity.
“Umno is already successful,” he said. “They wanted to us to split. So they have already done that, Umno is not interested any more because PAS is a weak party already.”
Mat Sabu said support for the party was wavering even in Kelantan, its stronghold which the party has ruled for more than 20 years. Many voters had become disillusioned with the current leadership especially after last year’s devastating monsoon floods, which displaced more than 200,000 people.
The death of spiritual leader Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and the sidelining of former vice president Husam Musa were among other factors for Kelantan’s shaky position, he said.
