KUALA LUMPUR: Officials of the Ministry of Domestic Trade,Cooperatives & Consumerism are investigating media reports of counterfeit goods being sold at Low Yat Plaza which had purportedly caused a group of youths to go on a rampage on Saturday.
The ministry’s Kuala Lumpur director, Muez Abd Aziz, said officers had been sent to gather intelligence on whether there is any fraud being carried out: if there is fraud, the ministry will take further action.
However, no formal complaint had been received from consumers regarding the purported sale of counterfeit goods.
Checks by Bernama at Low Yat Plaza today found that the mobile phone shop that was trashed yesterday was temporarily closed, and everything else there was back to normal.
One mobile phone seller, Ivan Lau, 20, denied online talk that merchants in Low Yat Plaza sold “clones” of mobile phones. He said the goods were purchased directly from authorised dealers.
“If I’m lying, I’m sure no buyers will come here … and besides, the Low Yat Plaza management will take action by imposing fines or immediately shutting down the shops which are found selling cloned items here,” he said.
