REMEMBER DATUK T SEX VIDEO? Ex-CM tells how Anwar forced him to resign over rape case
PETALING JAYA - “I had to temporarily vacate my positions,” said former Malacca chief minister Tan Sri Abdul Rahim Thamby Chik (pic) when he was hit by scandals and corruption allegations.
His statement came amid calls by the Opposition for Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak to go on leave while authorities investigate claims of embezzlement against the Prime Minister.
“When I was the chief minister of Malacca and the Umno Youth chief, I had to let go my positions temporarily to allow for the investigations to take place,” he said in a Facebook posting, Saturday night.
Abdul Rahim said after he was cleared from the allegations by authorities, he resumed his duty as Umno Youth chief, but was “duped” by former Opposition leader and deputy premier Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim into resigning as the chief minister.
“Anwar summoned me to his office and told me that the (then) prime minister (Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad) instructed me to resign as the chief minister as I had become a liability to the party,” he said.
Abdul Rahim claimed that he had to oblige when Anwar “forced” him to sign the resignation letter in front of him.
“Unfortunately after that, Tun Mahathir said he never made such an instruction,” Abdul Rahim added.
Abdul Rahim was the chief minister of Malacca from 1982 to 1994.
In 1994, he was charged with statutory rape of a minor, but the prosecutor later withdrew the charge citing lack of evidence.
On Friday, The Wall Street Journal and Sarawak Report published an article quoting an "unnamed investigator", claiming that almost US$700mil (RM2.6bil) of 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) funds went into the Prime Minister's personal bank accounts.
The Prime Minister's Office responded to the report, saying that it was an act of "political sabotage", while 1MBD insisted that no funds had been transferred to Najib's accounts.
Najib had also accused former premier Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad of “working hand in glove” with foreign nationals, and behind the “latest lie”. - ANN
