Shahbudin: Gen-Y silent if not for Mahathir

Political analyst says Dr Mahathir Mohamad’s latest blog posting, a sajak about Malaysia, is “the best words in the best order”

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad, acknowledges a political analyst, did more than his fair share in keeping the government on its toes since 2003 when he stepped down after 22 years as head of a government which had a love-hate relationship with the people. “It cannot be denied that Mahathir is doing something right now and for the benefit of all in taking on the government.”
There would be no end to the suffering of the people eventually, said the analyst, if Mahathir just keeps quiet. “The younger generation, the Gen-Y, would not be shy to just keep quiet if Mahathir had not spoken up.”
Shahbudin Husin was commenting on Mahathir’s latest blog posting which was in the form of a sajak(modern Malay poetry), Malaysia Tanahairku (Malaysia My Homeland).
The analyst noted that the former Prime Minister among others wrote: “biarlah aku pergi, mata terpejam rapat, nafas perlahan berhenti” and “aku akan pergi tidak lama lagi, dapatkah aku pejam mata dan hembus nafas terakhir.”
The thrust of both lines, given the overall context, may be whether Mahathir will leave a nation which will find itself once again in a position where it was colonised, albeit internally, humiliated and enslaved or a nation which will have its dignity intact and held in high regard in the community of nations. “Only Mahathir knows the true meaning of what he’s writing, the best words in the best order.”
“Although he’s already 90, we can only wish him good health and a few more years to help the people summon up enough courage to put matters right,” said Shahbudin.
“We can only imagine what would have been the state of the nation today had Mahathir not spoken up on issues of public interest and concern.”
For one, he added, the people wouldn’t know how much money that the political leaders and wives have in their bank accounts. “What will be the fate of the nation when Mahathir is no longer around and we have spendthrift leaders like Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak who likes to live a lavish lifestyle?
“If everybody wants to keep quiet, and there’s no Mahathir, while there’s lavish lifestyle in the belief that ‘cash is king’ what will be the national debt burden and debts incurred by companies like 1MDB? There would be no end to the suffering of the people eventually.”
