Will ‘smart Melayu’ Nur Jazlan take on the Bugis warrior?

Zaid Ibrahim urges parliament's watchdog to summon Najib for 1MDB hearings

KUALA LUMPUR: Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has challenged Umno politician Nur Jazlan Mohamed, as “a smart Melayu”, to “brave the wrath of the Bugis warrior” and summon the prime minister before parliament’s watchdog, the Public Accounts Committee.
Picking up on a question that Nur Jazlan himself had posed, on whether there was a need for Najib Razak to be summoned, Zaid said the answer was a resounding Yes.
“But the real question is whether Nur Jazlan is brave enough to face the wrath of the Bugis warrior,” said Zaid in a blog article, making reference to the prime minister’s recent assertions about his ancestry.
Zaid, a former MP for Kota Baru, said Nur Jazlan could restore some public faith in Malay leadership of public institutions if he summoned “that ounce of courage lacking in other Umno MPs” to call the prime minister before the public accounts committee which Nur Jazlan heads.
The committee has been holding hearings into the affairs of the government investment company 1Malaysia Development Bhd, whose financial transactions and investments, and its debts of RM42 billion, have been the subject of intense public criticism for months.
1MDB is owned by the finance minister and comes under Najib’s oversight, as prime minister and finance minister. He also heads the 1MDB board of advisers.
Zaid said Najib was “the real architect of 1MDB and everything that has taken place in the company under his watch since 2009″.
By summoning the PM, Nur Jazlan would give “us weary rakyat” a lifeline for their hopes that there still were responsible people in public positions and restore some public goodwill in Malay leaders against the hypocrisy of educated Malays in the Cabinet, in Parliament and in public institutions who pleaded ignorance of corruption, money laundering and criminal breach of trust, out of gratitude to Najib’s past “generosity”.
