DON'T LET NAJIB ESCAPE! M'sians rally behind MACC on Facebook

DON'T LET NAJIB ESCAPE! M'sians rally behind MACC on Facebook
In less than 24 hours after a public group named “Rakyat Bersama SPRM” (People for MACC) was created on Facebook, it has attracted almost 7,000 members.
This came as a surprise to the group's founder and administrator Azlan Sharif, 34, who said he only invited 170 of his friends to join the group that was created to allow people to voice support for the embattled Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
"Honestly, I am surprised too. I only know the 170 people I invited. The other people in the group are strangers to me.
"But it is now clear that the public is rallying behind MACC, which is dealing with untold challenges right now in its investigations against corruption and misappropriation," he told The Malaysian Insider today.
Azlan, a social activist involved in humanitarian work for groups like the Orang Asli, said he only started the Facebook group after 6pm yesterday.
That was before he learnt in the news that three MACC officers had been arrested for investigations over a leak in the commission's probe related to the controversial 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) scandal.
"I was taken aback that so many other Malaysians are unhappy and feeling bad over what happened to MACC. Previously, many people thought badly about the commission, thinking that it only hid evidence (of wrongdoing).
“But I think the recent developments have proven that MACC is an agency that does its job diligently," he said.
Many of those who have joined have posted links to the latest news articles related to MACC and comments on what they thought of the issue.
Many also posted words of encouragement for MACC officers who they felt were trying to do their jobs.
MACC has come under the spotlight after its office was raided and several of its senior officials and officers hauled up by the police.
Its special operations division director Datuk Bahri Mohamad Zin was also taken in by the police for questioning on Monday over an alleged leak of information in the 1MDB probe.
MACC is investigating a company called SRC International Sdn Bhd, which was formerly a subsidiary of federal investment fund 1MDB.
1MDB had amassed debts of RM42 billion over the recent years.
Azlan, who said he was not representing any political party or non-governmental organisation in this personal initiative of his, urged the people to stand behind the commission in view of the recent developments.
He said MACC was a body that answered to the King while the police answered to the home minister and the prime minister.
He said as a commission, it should have the freedom and independence to investigate any alleged corruption, abuse or misappropriation professionally, fairly and transparently without fear or favour.
If MACC had done anything wrong, he said, the commission should face an investigation by a tribunal and not the police.
He said the authorities should not try to confuse the people, such as the police saying it was only investigating MACC officers and not arresting them in the recent incidents.
"We need to support MACC and we should not be afraid to seek the truth. Today we saw opposition leaders rallying behind MACC. That is good." – TMI
