Hindraf: End drug rings in Kluang prison

Waytha Moorthy calls for inquest into prisoner's death and action on Suhakam findings.
Shashikumar-Selvam,
KUALA LUMPUR: The Hindraf human rights movement has called for government action against drug trafficking in Kluang prison, based on a Suhakam report, and for an inquest into the death of a prisoner, Shashikumar, found hanged in May.
The movement’s chairman, P Waytha Moorthy, said Suhakam (the human rights commission) had informed Shashikumar’s grandmother that prison authorities believed he may have hanged himself after threats from a drug trafficking syndicate in the prison not to reveal their activities.
Waytha Moorth said the commission’s findings raised more questions than answers and accused the prison authorities of “attempting to cover up a huge drug trafficking scandal”.
“Hindraf believes top prison authorities are working hand in glove with drug barons and prison inmates,” he said in a statement today.
He disputed Suhakam’s findings in the letter of July 16 that Shashikumar had twice tested positive for drugs in prison.
He questioned how drugs had entered the prison, and said Hindraf believed that Shashikumar had been murdered to prevent him from revealing information about the drug syndicate “which may involve top officers”.
Waytha Moorthy demanded that the authorities carry out an inquest into Shashikumar’s death. “This is a serious national security issue. Prison is for rehabilitation not a secure and lucrative drug business venue with a fixed clientele,” he said.
Shashikumar’s grandmother Madam Susila Rani questioned the reluctance of the judiciary and Attorney-General towards conducting an inquest. She said she would not claim Shashikumar’s body until an inquest is held, saying she deserved to know the truth, and wished to prevent further deaths in prison.
