Ismail: Hit the opposition now that they’re weak

Umno man urges unity, says members should capitalise on rifts in PAS instead of attacking each other

KUALA PILAH: Umno members were urged today to attack the opposition and capitalise on their weakness, instead of turning against each other.
Supreme Council member Ismail Sabri Yaakob said members should defend the party’s principles by defending their president and showing confidence in the leadership.
They should not be caught up with issues played up by the opposition coalition, he said.
Ismail Sabri said Umno members should take advantage of the opposition’s recent differences including the rifts within PAS. His remark was a reference to divisions in PAS between the liberal and ulama factions, which have led a breakaway group under Mohamed Sabu forming a new political party which will be launched on Merdeka Day.
Instead, when the opposition was weakened “we are looking for ways to weaken ourselves by attacking our president, attacking the leadership openly and so on,” he said, according to Bernama.
“Let us think what have we done to attack the opposition all this time. We seem to be as though the enemy is no longer the opposition but people inside the party,” he said.
He called on Umno members to unite under one leader in order to strengthen the party. “We must defend our president to strengthen the party. If we fail to defend our president, our party will become weak,” he said, in a speech when opening Kuala Pilah Umno’s delegates meeting today.
Ismail’s remarks about unity come in the wake of major differences between party president Najib Razak and his deputy, Muhyiddin Yassin, who has questioned the affairs of the government’s investment arm 1Malaysia Development Bhd and the reported “donation” of RM2.6 billion reportedly deposited in Najib’s private bank accounts.
Muhyiddin and vice-president Shafie Apdal were dismissed from Najib’s cabinet late last month, and have found support from various Umno divisions in their home states of Johor and Sabah respectively as well as other divisions in other states.
