MINISTER SAYS A-G IS RIGHT TO DISBAND SPECIAL TASK FORCE

Paul Low
(The Rakyat Post) – Attorney-General (AG) Tan Sri Apandi Ali made the right decision to disband the Special Task Force made up of his Chambers, Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM), police and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan also said the A-G cannot be part of the investigations into the government strategic investment arm 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) because he is the prosecutor.
“Every government departments has their own set of laws and that is why the investigations can be carried out despite the task force being disbanded.
“The difference in this case now is that the A-G is the prosecutor so it is best that his Chambers are not involved in the investigations,” he said when met recently.
Low said MACC, BNM, the police and A-G’s Chambers had been cooperating with each other over the last five years in cases involving the illegal transfer of funds, smuggling and underground activities.
“The inter-agency cooperation has been in existence, even though it has not been made public but it has recovered billions of ringgit.”
The Special Task Force was formed to investigate allegations, made by The Wall Street Journal, that RM2.6 billion, former 1MDB subsidiary SRC International to a bank account held by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.
However, MACC has since released a statement that the funds came from a donor in the Middle East.
