PM accused of using diversion gimmicks

Teresa Kok says Najib must respond to allegations before talking about political funding reform.

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Najib Razak’s talk about political funding reform cannot be taken seriously until he gives straight answers to questions regarding his involvement in alleged corruption, says DAP vice-chairperson Teresa Kok.
In a press statement today, Kok said Najib’s recent call for funding reform and the government’s decision to set up a committee to recommend laws to achieve it were mere gimmicks to divert attention from allegations against him that are related to the 1MDB scandal.
She said Najib needed to give credible answers instead of merely claiming he was committed to transparency and insisting that he had nothing to hide.
“What credibility does he have when he talks about political funding reform but yet refuses to answer questions about the 1MDB-related allegations against him?” she asked.
“Najib should not think that Malaysians have accepted all his ‘syok sendiri’ statements and diversion gimmicks because the fact is that the more he says there is nothing to hide about the 1MDB scandal, the more people will believe there is everything to hide.”
She also attacked MCA Secretary-General Ong Ka Chuan for saying, after his appointment as International Trade and Industry Minister II, that strong party unity was one of the factors why MCA were given additional cabinet posts in the recent reshuffle.
She alleged that MCA got the posts only because MCA would not ask questions about the 1MDB scandal.
The DAP central executive committee agreed at a meeting two days ago to demand, as a precondition to participating in the proposed National Consultative Committee on Political Financing, that the RM2.6 billion donation scandal must not be whitewashed, but fully addressed in the panel’s deliberations.
The proposal to set up the committee was announced on Tuesday by Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Paul Low.
The committee will be composed of 15 to 20 people and will include representatives from both BN and non-BN parties, people who are experts in the subject matter and representatives of civil society.
