KUALA LUMPUR: Police have not received any request from the organisers of the ‘808 Rally’ to be held this Saturday by a group of media activists protesting against the suspension of The Edge.
Dang Wangi district police chief, ACP Zainol Samah said the organisers should follow the rules set for holding an assembly as stipulated in the Peaceful Assembly Act (PAA) 2012. “So far, police have not received any notice from the organisers of the rally.
“However, we will try to contact the organisers for them to come forward and discuss with us, and brief us on the rally that will be held this Saturday.”
He said this when met by reporters at a Hari Raya celebration organised by women officers at the Kuala Lumpur police contingent headquarters, here, today.
Zainol said if the organisers remained defiant and held the gathering, stern action would be taken against those violating the PAA.
Also present at the Raya do were Deputy Inspector-General of Police Noor Rashid Ibrahim and Kuala Lumpur police chief Tajuddin Md Isa.
The publishing permits of The Edge Weekly and The Edge Financial Daily were suspended for three months with effect from July 27, over its reporting on issues related to 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB). A local news portal had earlier reported that the Coalition of Press Freedom announced it would be organising a rally around the capital on Saturday.
The rally was being held as a mark of solidarity with The Edge, to put pressure and protest against the Home Ministry, which suspended the newspaper.
