Sept 1 'a sacred date' for all-new MAS

Sept 1 'a sacred date' for all-new MAS
KUALA LUMPUR - Sept 1 will be a sacred date for Malaysia Airlines (MAS) as it begins a new era, leaving behind a legacy that has haunted the national carrier for so long, a Member of Parliament said.
Member of Parliament for Setiawangsa Datuk Ahmad Fauzi Zahari said after MAS was given a new lifeline worth billions of ringgit, it had no option except to start with a “clean record” and a new work culture in the face of the competitive aviation industry.
Drastic measures under the airline’s restructuring plan involved reducing its workforce from 20,000 to 14,000, rationalising routes and renegotiating supply contracts.
“As of Sept 1, the all-new MAS will be known as Malaysia Airlines Bhd (MAB) and will operate as a commercial entity and no longer as a government entity.
“For me, the most important thing after Sept 1 is that the old MAS is considered a defunct company, while the new MAS signals the start of a new era for MAS, which must be run as a commercial entity that can no longer turn back to the government when it encounters turbulence again,” he told Bernama.
Ahmad Fauzi is confident that if MAS’ management and staff were to look forward and learn from past mistakes and not repeat them, the company would not fail again. Instead, it would move forward on a “clean slate” and a new work culture.
He said 14,000 MAS employees, who were reemployed, should be thankful that they could keep their jobs and their responsibility now was to adapt quickly to the new and more challenging environment and work culture.
“Whether they like it or not, it’s not an option any more. They must look to the future. These 14,000 employees, they have the responsibility to determine MAS’ future. To me, that’s the most important thing.
“Let me remind them that the government is confident that they can relive MAS’ glory days,” he said, adding that the new work culture should be considered as part of the key performance indicators (KPIs).
“While MAS employees can ask what MAS can give them, MAS in turn can ask what it can give MAS in return this time around.”
In retrospect, Ahmad Fauzi said although the government had spent more than RM19.2 billion from 2001 to 2014 to help MAS gain its footing through three restructuring exercises, they had failed to yield any results.
MAS then survived on funds injected by the government, not from the profitability of its operations and this had been going on for over a decade.
“As RM19.2 billion of public funds was pumped to salvage MAS, the last lifeline must be considered final and MAS must stand on its own feet after this.”
Ahmad Fauzi said the question whether MAS employees could adapt to the new culture should not arise as the tough restructuring plan — cutting one-third of its work force, rationalising the routes and renegotiating lopsided contracts —was gaining momentum.
Armed with a “clean record” and free from old baggage, MAS management and employees must ensure that the restructuring plan is successful as there will be no more RM6 billion injection of public funds to save the national icon, he said.
Besides Christoph Mueller helming the MAB, several candidates would likely be roped in from outside to lead MAS’ strategic operations.
“Like Mueller, these fresh faces from outside will also bring with them not only new work culture, but also new technologies to turn MAS into a more competitive outfit on a par with their rivals,” said Ahmad Fauzi, adding that likewise the employees would have to adapt to the new culture quickly.
In the final analysis, the MAS restructuring plan would not only benefit the company and its employees, but will also be for the good of the people and country.
“There is a parable that ‘you can’t teach an old dog new tricks’, but we are dealing with people. As long as there is a craving to learn, we can change and change for the better.” - Therakyatpost
