Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin has urged Umno president Datuk Seri Najib Razak to explain the whereabouts of the balance of the RM2.6 billion "donation" deposited into his personal accounts.
The Umno deputy president said the amount banked into Najib's accounts was huge, and asked where the balance of the funds might be, since the two accounts at AmBank in Kuala Lumpur had already been closed in 2013.
"What is the balance of the money when the account was closed? Because the amount was huge, and definitely there will be a balance.
Muhyiddin said he was unable to answer such questions and instead urged Najib, who is also the prime minister, to clear the air.
"How much was received… how much was used for general election… how do I know? I didn't get it. Maybe the president can answer it," said Muhyiddin, who was dropped from Cabinet in a recent reshuffle.
Muhyiddin and another cabinet minister, Datuk Seri Shafie Apdal, had openly questioned Najib on his handling of government-owned investor 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB), which has debts of RM42 billion.
Companies linked to 1MDB were named in the transfer of the funds to Najib's accounts as reported by The Wall Street Journal on July 2. However, it is not known where the funds originated from.
The largest portion of the funds – US$681 million – had been transferred to Najib's accounts from a company in the British Virgin Islands in March 2013, ahead of the general election in May that year.
Another sum of US$11.1 million (RM42 million) was transferred between December 2014 and February this year, and had flowed through 1MDB-linked companies.
Najib and Umno leaders have since said that there was nothing wrong with placing the money in his accounts as it was a political donation which he as party president, had held in trust.
There has been no information to date on how the money was spent.
Tourism and Culture Minister Datuk Seri Nazri Aziz said the donor of the funds was a "brotherly nation" in the Middle East which wanted "certain parties" in Malaysia to win the elections.
