Zaid feels the pinch of the Singapore dollar

The weakening ringgit is making the former law minister cringe with shame down south.

PETALING JAYA: The weakening ringgit, hovering close to the RM4 mark against the US dollar, is making Zaid Ibrahim wince in “pain and shame” in Singapore, where the local currency reigns supreme against the ringgit as well.
Taking to Twitter to nurse his wounds, the former law minister said: “Now in Spore, just to feel the pinch, pain and shame.”
Going back to days gone by, when the ringgit was just as mighty as the Singapore dollar, Zaid reminisced on spending time in Singapore as a boy, saying it was so much fun because RM1 would get you 1 Singapore dollar.
He also said Singaporeans were probably turning to Malaysia now as a shopping haven because things like food and clothes would be more affordable to them.
“When in form 4 in JB, I would come to Spore during weekends, so much fun because there was no fear of Spore Dollar. 1:1.
“We could then do some shopping like food and clothes; today Sporeans can buy our everything from us.”
But if there is one thing Malaysia has in common with Singapore, according to Zaid, it is probably the taxi drivers.
“3 Spore taxis refused to take me to Regent Hotel from Little India lunchtime,” he said. “I thought they cannot refuse.”
