Zam: ‘Sword of Damocles’ hangs over Mingguan Editor

The Mingguan Malaysia Editor argues that if the RM2.6 billion was Umno money, other party leaders would have known about it, and not just Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.

KUALA LUMPUR: Former Information Minister Zainuddin Maidin, once Editor-in-Chief of Utusan Malaysia, thinks the jury is still out on whether Mingguan Malaysia Editor Ku Seman Ku Hussein will be shown the door soon over his recent column where he rejected the RM2.6 billion in Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s personal accounts as Umno money.
“Ku Seman shocked Umno supporters with his column,” said Zainuddin. “He argues that the money is Najib’s personal funds. If it was Umno money, he said, other party leaders would have known about it, and not just Najib.”
“If acknowledged as Umno money, party members would be left carrying a live biawak (monitor lizard),” Zainuddin quoted Ku Seman as saying.
Ku Seman was joined by Senior Editor Zaini Hassan who wrote a cynical piece on the RM2.6 billion controversy in his Cuit Cuit column. Zaini also heads the Graduates Association of UiTM which has hundreds of thousands of members. His column can be found here: kayangdailypost.blogpost.com
Zainuddin wonders how the generals in the forefront of Najib’s army of attackers would read Ku Seman’s stand on the RM2.6 billion. He referred in particular to Jasa Director-General Puad Zarkashi and Minister of Communications and Multimedia Salleh Said Keruak.
He pointed out that although Utusan Malaysia was trying to defend Najib on various issues, the top editorial line-up faces resistance from within the Editorial Department. “They are not at all in favour of making a big deal out of supporting Najib.”
“They should be ready to face the consequences of taking such a stand against the political leadership.”
The latest picture in Utusan Malaysia, he noted, was one of sacked Deputy Prime Minister Muhyiddin Yassin together with Home Minister and Deputy Prime Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi in Johore. “The picture made many Umno divisions think twice about withdrawing their invitations to Muhyiddin to officiate at their annual general meetings.”
During Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi’s time, said Zainuddin, Umno politicians were afraid to be seen together with former Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad. “However, a picture of Muhyiddin together with Mahathir at the Umno Secretary-General’s house broke that fear.”
“This is the history of Utusan Malaysia which has been repeating itself especially over the last 50 years.”
Zainuddin stressed that journalists, although even under great pressure, will not cave in if they believe in the truth, have values, and principles. “They will rise up and speak their mind even if it places their immediate future in danger.”
What Ku Seman was going through, recalled Zainuddin, happened during the time of Tunku Abdul Rahman, Abdul Razak, Mahathir, and Badawi. “All these periods saw the rise of journalists who were prepared to sacrifice themselves for the Malay cause.”
He referred to the history of Utusan Malaysia as outlined in Professor William Roff’s classic, “Origin of Malaysia Nationalism”. “Roff pointed out that history repeats itself at Utusan Malaysia which retains its identity as a newspaper that mirrors the Malay political struggle.”
