ZETI STRIKES 'QUIET TERROR' INTO NAJIB, ROSMAH: BNM concludes probe, wants 'enforcement actions'
With the ringgit plummeting and concern about Prime Minister Najib Razak's corruption case hitting the roof, Bank Negara governor Zeti Akhtar Aziz was indeed woman of the hour as she gave a press conference on Thursday.
The well-respected banker stuck with her 'play safe' image, carefully couching her words and refusing to be baited into revealing more than she intended. But for sure, what she said must have struck terror into the hearts of her perceived foes - Najib and his wife Rosmah Mansor.
The first couple have been accused of trying to intimidate her as well as other investigators including from the the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission into dropping a high-level corruption probe.
Bank Negara's verdict - GUILTY! No move to clear Najib of blame
According to Zeti, the central bank has completed its investigation on bank transactions related to 1MDB and has submitted these papers to the Attorney-General's chambers. The central bank has also recommended enforcement actions to the AG, said Zeti, but she declined to elaborate on what form and against whom should the 'enforcement actions' be taken.
To those following the saga of corruption shrouding Najib's brainchild 1MDB sovereign fund, it is clear from Zeti's words the central bank had found guilty parties during its investigations.
The high-profile figures involved in 1MDB transgressions would include Najib himself, who is the sole and final authority for all transactions at the state-owned fund. In fact, the possibility that the prime minister was involved in grand-scale corruption had been the main reason why a special task force was set up in the first place - so that the prime minister could be probed by an independent panel consisting of the country's top regulating authorities.
"It is an earth-shattering bombshell that Zeti did not clear Najib of blame as he is star suspect in the investigation. Instead she has recommended enforcement actions and these could only be  related to arrests and charges,"  a political source told Malaysia Chronicle.
"What will the new AG do now? Since the new AG was just appointed by Najib, we can suspect Apandi will do all he can to block that."
Today's much-awaited press conference was Zeti's first public appearance in weeks after she and other heads of enforcement agencies came under scrutiny over the 1MDB, Najib probe.
The probe had been controversial as it also involved the transfer of RM2.6 billion into Prime Minister Najib's personal bank accounts.
Adding to the picture of guilty that now haunts Najib are the controversial steps he took last month to suddenly sack the Attorney General, Gani Patail, his own deputy prime minister, Muhyiddin Yassin, as well as promote 4 members of the parliamentary Public Accounts Committee into his Cabinet - thereby indirectly foiling the PAC's own probe into 1MDB and himself.
Replacing Gani as the new AG is Apandi Ali, and Muhyiddin as the new DPM is Zahid Hamidi.
Zeti tosses hot potato to the AG, but in doing so LETS THE PEOPLE DOWN
Bank Negara was one of the 4 agencies in the task force that Apandi was quick to dismantle when he took over from Gani. The others are the police, the Malaysian Anti Corruption Commission and the Attorney-General's Chambers.
Only the MACC and Bank Negara have dared to show independent streaks, refusing to abandon the ir investigations despite tremendous pressure from the Prime Minister's office. The AG and the Inspector General of Police Khalid Bakar have shown dogged loyalty to Najib and his wife Rosmah.
Several MACC investigators were arrested and quizzed by the police, while Zeti herself became the target of online smear  allegations.
Today, after dropping her 'enforcement' bombshell, Zeti revealed that 7 Bank Negara officers have been questioned by police over information leaks related to 1MDB. According to her, the 7 officers have given their full cooperation to the police.
She declined to reveal who they were, when they were questioned and which section of the bank they worked in.
"Zeti has shown courage today. Her bank has done what they are supposed to do. The only thing is, they are not publicizing their results. Given the current political crisis in the country, that doesn't help much. Everything now flows to the AG and we can suspect his first goal will be to protect Najib and Rosmah," said the source.
"As a responsible citizen, Zeti cannot play safe like this She must do more. I know she could have decided to retire early and that would be Najib and Rosmah's dream come true. Say nothing, pass the report to the AG and quickly retire. But Zeti has said she is staying on and this means, if the environment changes she could reveal what's in her report.
"As the head of the central bank, it is incumbent on her to state whether anyone, including Najib and 1MDB, breached the Anti-Money Laundering Act. No need to hide behind the AG for that. Really, Malaysians must not allow their top civil servants to get away like that. If Zeti wants to enjoy her cushy salary and perks, she must put the people's interests first and the people are now suffering. Why should she be so exclusive and safe from storm, while the man in the street sweats and struggles to make ends meet under a wastrel Najib government." Malaysia Chronicle
