Isma unhappy Najib intervened in conversion case

An editorial on Isma's website urges the National Registration Department to go ahead with its appeal against a Sarawakian's conversion from Islam to Christianity.

PETALING JAYA: A writer for Muslim rights group Isma has taken Prime Minister Najib Razak to task for intervening in the conversion case of Rooney Rebit of Sarawak.
In an editorial titled “Kata Pedang” (Word of the Sword), the writer advises the National Registration Department (NRD) against withdrawing its appeal on the Kuching High Court’s decision to allow Muslim convert Rooney, a Bidayuh, to be legally recognised as a Christian.
Recent reports have stated that the department withdrew its appeal when Najib, after consultation with Sarawak Chief Minister Adenan Satem, instructed them to do so.
In the editorial, the writer puts forward a set of questions, starting with “does Najib not know that if someone wants to be an apostate, he should have the consent of the Shariah courts?”
“Does Najib want the NRD to go against proper procedures before changing Azmi Mohamad Azman’s name to Rooney Rebit? Does he not know that the appeal by the NRD was submitted according to standard operating procedures?
“Does Najib not know that the Shariah courts had not decided that Azmi could leave Islam? Is Najib so powerful that he can instruct NRD to withdraw their appeal?” the editorial asks.
The NRD had earlier insisted Rooney obtain a letter of release from the Shariah Court for his conversion, a demand the Kuching High Court disagreed with.
In pointing out that apostasy was an “extremely sensitive” matter, the writer said preventing, rather the encouraging such cases from occurring was important.
The writer also accused Najib of being “desperate for votes” and added, “Najib, please learn from Lina Joy’s case.”
In the case of Lina Joy, the Muslim woman was unsuccessful in having her religion changed from Islam to Christianity.
