Nazri: Withdrawing Dr M's police escort long overdue

Umno supreme council Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz has hailed the withdrawal of police escort for former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad, saying it should have been done long ago.
Nazri, who is also tourism minister, said this is because Mahathir has been using police outriders to escort him to anti-government functions.
"He brought it upon himself. I don't think he should get escorts as he is bashing the government that is providing him this privilege.
"It (the withdrawal) should have been done long ago," he told journalists after visiting Sekolah Kebangsaan Kampung Buntal in Kuching today.
Nazri added the government had provided police escorts to Mahathir for his safety but the former premier instead chose to put himself in danger.
The withdrawal of Mahathir's escort, effective April 28, was first revealed by veteran newsman A Kadir Jasin.
Police escort is a customary privilege accorded to former prime ministers.
However, the government stripped Mahathir of his government positions and privileges after he spearheaded a movement to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Mahathir retired as prime minister in 2003 after 22 years in power.
Nazri also blasted Kota Raja Umno vice chief Hamidi Abu Bakar who is against the sacking of suspended Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin, Umno vice president Shafie Apdal and former Kedah Menteri Besar Mukhriz Mahathir, who have joined the movement against Najib.
Nazri suggested that Hamidi join the trio after he warned that sacking them may cause Umno grassroots to lose faith in the party.
"If he wants to follow them, I can find someone more junior in the party to also propose that he (Hamidi) too be expelled.
"Go join them. I challenge him to join them and see if it will turn out to be a disaster or not," he said.

Nazri had previously expressed his intention to move a motion for for Muhyiddin and Mukhriz's sacking at the next Umno supreme council meeting scheduled after the May 7 Sarawak election.
He added that Shafie had previously not breached party discipline but crossed the line when he attended a dialogue with Mahathir in Kedah this week.
Nazri said Mahathir is now on the opposition's side and Shafie appearing with him meant that he too should be kicked out of the party. -Mkini
