Laid off High 5 bread workers cry foul as bleak Hari Raya looms

A number of High 5 bread factory employees have demanded their rightful compensation, following their sudden termination just weeks from the Hari Raya celebrations.
About 30 of the workers from High 5 Consolidated Berhad were gathered outside its Shah Alam headquarters this morning to protest what they claim is unfair termination.
The workers’ representative Mohd Rosnizam Abu Said claimed 60 workers had received a letter from the company on June 22, informing them that the company will be ceasing operations on June 23.
The undated letter, however, stated that it represented their one month’s notice.
“This is a terrible lie that we’ve been fed.
"We want to know what's going to happen to us. What about our compensation, our rights as workers?" Rosnizam told reporters during the protest.
This termination came without any prior warning, he added.
According to a police report one of the workers has lodged, they were given checks for their half month’s pay and also told they did not need to report for work from June 24 onwards.
“The Malay workers are about to celebrate their Hari Raya with only half a month’s pay.
“This is really disappointing,” Rosnizam lamented.
'EPF not paid'
They had also not received their commissions for the past two months, claimed Rosnizam.
He added although Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) contributions had been deducted from their salaries, their EPF accounts recorded outstanding payments over the past eight months.
He lamented their outstanding EPF contributions were causing the workers to have trouble getting bank loans, as banks refused to provide any loans due to their poor EPF payment record.
He also claimed this was happening to High 5 employees throughout all the firm's 12 branches nationwide.

There are about 1,000 High 5 employees around the country, he added.
PSM secretary-general A Sivarajan corroborated this, saying he had received similar complaints from High 5 employees in Ipoh and Seremban, among others.
Sivarajan said they have already lodged a police report and intend to lodge a report to the Labour Department on Monday.
He urged the Human Resources Ministry to take immediate action on behalf of these workers, before they are completely abandoned by the company.
