Pagoh Umno rejects Muhyiddin's sacking, slams 'character assassination'

Pagoh Umno and its Youth wing are both standing behind sacked deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin, after he was expelled in a unanimous decision at the Umno supreme council meeting yesterday.
"The Pagoh Umno branch chiefs have decided to reject the supreme council's decision to sack Muhyiddin," said Pagoh Umno information chief Hairul Izam Abd Samat at a press conference recording uploaded by China Press today.
He said one of the reasons they have rejected this decision is because it did not follow proper procedure as stated in the party's constitution, as Muhyiddin had not been called to defend himself.
Muhyiddin had also been chosen as the party deputy president and Pagoh Umno chief by Umno members throughout the country, said Hairul in the video.
"So this decision by the supreme council has betrayed Umno members," he said.
He added whatever criticisms Muhyiddin has directed against party president Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak were based upon reports by government agencies like the former attorney-general, the former Bank Negara Malaysia governor and the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC).
Muhyiddin only criticised the president for the sake of the party, he said, and not for his own self interest.
"He (Muhyiddin) has taken up the responsibility of defending the party and the country's image.
"He has never talked bad about the party and has always acted to ensure the party stays strong," he said.
'Planned character assassination'
Separately, Pagoh Umno Youth wing said they too were disappointed with the sacking of their division chief and has condemned the decision by the supreme council.
"We were told by reliable sources that Muhyiddin was never given a show-cause letter or called to defend himself against the allegations.
"Hence, this is a form of tyranny, and clearly was a planned character assassination," Pagoh Umno Youth chief Mohd Zaid A Rahman said in a statement today.
It would not make sense if this decision is accepted by regular members like them without question, he said, especially as they're witnessing the abuse of power by the supreme council.
"Did the supreme council think we would just accept this unethical decision with open hearts?"If something like this can happen to the deputy president, what more to us normal members? What hope can we put on the current Umno?" he asked.

Mohd Zaid also urged for national issues plaguing the people to be solved as quickly as possible according to the law.
Najib yesterday announced the supreme council decision to expel deputy president Muhyiddin and former Kedah menteri besar Mukhriz Mahathir from the party, and to suspend vice-president Mohd Shafie Apdal.
All three have been vocal critics of 1MDB and Najib's administration.
Muhyiddin in a response today said he will not be silenced by the sacking and he will not appeal the decision. - mkini
