A human rights NGO has expressed shock over Deputy Home Minister Nur Jazlan Mohamed's belief that torture has not been used against alleged terror suspects in Malaysia.
Suaram described Nur Jazlan as a "misinformed minister or minister ignorant of issues under his portfolio".
Its executive director, Sevan Doraisamy, said:
"Suaram has documented countless cases and incidents where torture was used as the primary means to extract a confession or to coerce a false confession from suspects that were arrested on suspicion of committing an offence."
"The practice of violence also extends to alleged terror suspects and such incidents have been thoroughly documented and reported by Suaran throughout the years," he added.
"The families of the victims of torture have also filed their respective report to the Malaysian Human Rights Commission and other relevant agencies for investigations," he said.
Sevan was responding to Nur Jazlan’s views suggesting that Malaysia adopts a ‘soft’ legal approach in addressing the issue of terrorism.
He said that contrary to the view that Malaysia’s law on terrorism was soft, there were provisions that enabled detention without trial such as the Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012, Prevention of Crime Act 1959 and Prevention of Terrorism Act 2015.
These laws made it abundantly clear that Malaysian laws are not ‘soft’ as described (by Nur Jazlan), Sevan said.
"The application of different types of ‘preventive’ laws on a suspect for the same offence makes the existing laws that are already uncompromising no better than the practices of Guantanamo Bay," he said.
Meanwhile, PKR has called for an immediate special committee to be formed to “fight the violence in our communities”.
PKR vice-president Nurul Izzah said the people were doubtful over the country's level of security due to the number of shooting cases in various parts of the country.
In the last Parliament session in February, Nurul had questioned the involvement of security forces in militant activities.
Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi had then replied that the situation was under control.
"The Puchong incident showed that two out of 15 arrested were police personnel.
"Tomas Oliver, a terrorist expert, claimed that threats from such groups were higher and they come from various militants like Bangsa Moro and Abu Sayyaf," Nurul said in a statement.
"Statistics showed that Malaysians recruited to join the Islamic State (IS) were six times more than Indonesians," she added.
She was responding to the recent bomb attack outside an entertainmentt club in Puchong during Ramadan.
She also criticised the Prevention of Terrorism Act, saying it was weak in fighting the war against terrorists.
"Eventhough more than 100 individuals suspected of being terrorists were detained under this act, the police have yet to provide enough information to show that the law is successful in combating terrorist activities," Nurul said. - Mkini
