At Bersatu launch, Dr M seeks awakening among ‘forgetful’ Malays

Former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad moved to set the tone for Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) at the party’s launch tonight, urging an awakening amongst Malays that have been the bedrock of Umno’s support.
Mahathir said he had witnessed what Malays, who were perceived to be “weak”, could do when there is an awakening.
The 91-year-old Bersatu chairperson said his longevity allowed him to see this during the colonial era even though some today mocked him of becoming “senile”.
“Yes, Malays are weak and forget easily. But an awakening brings them unimaginable strength,” he told the crowd of over 5,000 people at Stadium Malawati in Shah Alam.
The 13,000-capacity stadium was around half-filled but was thinner on the uppermost level.
Mahathir recalled how Malays, who in the past believed that they were incapable of self-rule, suddenly rose up against the colonial masters after an awakening.
“This race, when awakened by the fact that their land would be wretched away from them and that they would become foreigners in their own land, awoke, arose and united for a counter-attack to reclaim their honour and country,” he said.
He said this led to the notion of ‘Malaysia Boleh’ and ‘Melayu Boleh’ today as they achieved development, acquired knowledge, and became successful professionals.
“However, wealth carries with it a venom that can poison minds and destroy noble values.
“What was a fiery nationalist spirit which united the race and gave us strength - from all the material wealth (that was gained), it has taken over and all noble values have been replaced with boundless greed,” he said.
Mahathir pointed to the alleged widespread corruption, including the 1MDB scandal, and how people can now be easily bought over, using his trademark “dedak” (animal feed) reference.
Borrowing the Malay nationalist saying that “Malays will never disappear”, Mahathir concurred with this but asked what kind of Malays that will be left.
He reminded that the success against the colonial masters was not perpetual and a new form of colonisation was not impossible.
“Malays forget easily. Many Malays forget easily or are deliberately forgetful.
“But Alhamdulillah, there are some who do not forget. There are some who are awakened.

“And with this awakening, they fear of what is happening and the catastrophe that beckons,” he said, in apparent reference to Bersatu.
He said those who have awakened, who love their country, race and religion, who are not taken in by greed and are trustworthy, those who have a little courage, have chosen to take a stance.
“The sacrifice for them is small compared to the massive loss and catastrophe that awaits them if they are unwilling to sacrifice,” he said.- Mkini
