List of 21 Oldest Mosques In The World, Majority Islam Is Indian

Been doing some research on the spread of  Islam.

Here is a list of the 21 oldest mosques in the world.

Understandably the  four oldest mosques are in Mecca and Medina in today's Saudi Arabia.

Interestingly the  fifth oldest mosque in the world is the Huaisheng Mosque at Guangzhou in China built in 627 AD,  five years BEFORE the Prophet is said to have died.

Sitting at Number 7 position is the Cheraman Juma Masjid in Kodungulur, Kerala (India), built in 629 AD, three years BEFORE the prophet died.

Number 8 oldest mosque in the world is the Palaiya Juma Masjid at Kilakarai in Tamil Nadu, India which was built in 630 AD, two years before the prophet's death.

Here is a map location of Kilakarai in Tamil Nadu, India :

This is from Wikipedia here.  Its no big deal. They wont be murtad if they missed the exact date of construction by a decade or two.

The Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem was built 70 years later in 705 AD.

The Great Umayyad Mosque in Damascus was built 80 years later in 715 AD.

The Great Shrine of the Shias ie the Imam Ali mosque in Najaf, Iraq was built almost 350 years later in 977 AD.

Among the oldest mosques in Indonesia is the Masjid Demak in Java believed to have been built 900 years later  in the 15th century by the Wali Songo.

The oldest mosque in the Malay Peninsula  is said to be the Masjid Kampong Laut in Nilam Puri, Kelantan built  1100 years later in the 18th century.
.

There are about 1.4 billion Muslims in the world today. Of this number, the Indian subcontinent (from Bangladesh until Afghanistan) has the following population of Muslims :

Afghan 34 million
Pakistan 183 million
Bangladesh 155 million
India 255 million.

The total figure is 627 million Muslims from Afghanistan to Bangladesh. This area was known to the Arabs as 'Sind' (Afghan area) and / or 'Hind'.

The Indian subcontinent where people drink teh tarik, eat roti naan, capati, thosai, beriyani etc is home to the largest number of Muslims in the world.

This has had a significant impact on Islam and will have a bigger impact on Islam in the future.

Note that in India, the 255 million Muslims make up about 20% of the total Indian population. They are  a minority in a Hindu majority India.  Still there are more Muslims in Hindu majority India than in Pakistan or Bangladesh.
.

The large majority of Muslims in the Indian subcontinent  were born into the Hanafi sect.  This includes many of the Indian Muslims or mamaks in Malaysia (like me).
.
This will also have a major impact on Islam in the future.  Maybe we will discuss more later.
