Rules prevent ministers from heading sports group

After being named as a "better" candidate to lead the Football Association of Malaysia (FAM), Youth and Sports minister Khairy Jamaluddin today said all federal ministers are prevented from running for any positions in local sports associations.
"There is a Cabinet ruling preventing a federal minister from running for any positions in a sports association.
"So any minister who wants to hold positions in local sports associations, they must obtain permission from the prime minister or Cabinet before running for any posts," he told reporters after closing Bank Negara Malaysia's Finance Carnival in Kuala Lumpur.
The Rembau MP said this when asked for comments on Utusan Malaysia's Awang Selamat column today naming him as a contender for FAM's presidency, amid an ongoing spat between Johor crown prince Tunku Ismail Ibrahim and Kelantan Football Association (Kafa) adviser Annuar Musa.
“There are many better choices for FAM president than the former Kafa president and the Johor Tigers (JDT) club owner Tunku Ismail,” wrote Awang Selamat, the collective pseudonym for Utusan Malaysia's editors.
"Awang sees another credible candidate, which is Khairy himself," it further said, in pointing out how past Cabinet ministers and even former prime ministers had served as FAM presidents.
No comment on Mara sponsorship
Annuar had resigned as Kafa president but reportedly expressed interest to run for FAM's top post, ahead of the Jan 23 deadline for all nominations.
Tunku Ismail have previously been named as another possible contender for the post.
Khairy, meanwhile, also refused further comments over controversies surrounding sponsorship of Kelantan's The Red Warriors.

"I believe Annuar have answered (the allegations)," said Khairy.
Tunku Ismail had last week accused Annuar, who is also Mara chairperson, of using the federal agency's funds to sponsor the ailing Kelantan football team.
Annuar have since said that Mara will abide by Rural and Regional Development Minister Ismail Sabri Yaakob's decision for Mara and UniKL to defer all sponsorships for this year.
The Umno information chief also pledged full cooperation with any investigations and that a full report on the matter would be prepared for the ministry.- Mkini
