Umno leader compares 'democratic' DAP to 'democratic' North Korea

An Umno supreme council member has compared DAP to North Korea with regard to the two having the term "democratic" in their names.
"Is DAP a democratic party?" asked Mohd Puad Zarkashi in a statement, adding that some would answer this question in a cynical manner.
"If we believe North Korea is a democratic nation because it is known as the Democratic People's Republic of North Korea (DPRK), then we can also believe DAP is a democratic party," he added.
Referring to Lim Kit Siang and his son, Guan Eng, he said although DAP claims to champion the true essence of democracy, its top leadership is, however, dominated by a family dynasty.
Puad also claimed there are no signs of the father and son pair planning a transition of power.
However, this is expected to be Guan Eng's third and last term as DAP secretary-general, a post which he held since 2004.
DAP in 2003 introduced a three-year term limit for the post of secretary-general.
The DAP central executive committee election was supposed to take place last year but was postponed in preparation of the 14th general election.
'Lims have a stranglehold on DAP'
The party's constitution allows party elections to be postponed for up to 18 months.
Accusing the Lims of having a stranglehold on DAP's democracy, Puad recalled how the party's central executive committee (CEC) election on Feb 15, 2012, was changed 19 days later on the grounds of technical mistakes.
He said even DAP members accused the party of manipulation, and the Registrar of Societies (ROS) has yet to endorse the CEC election results.
"Due to this, Kit Siang is not qualified to bring the slogan 'Ubah' (change) if the Lim dynasty continues to control the party and the election process is not transparent," he added.
With regard to the four elected representatives in Malacca quitting DAP, Puad claimed that the opposition towards the "Lim dynasty" is growing in momentum.
"Guan Eng's corruption case will be heard in court next month and Kit Siang's credibility is being questioned, which are signs that the Lim dynasty is under pressure," he added.

Furthermore, Puad said, the presence of former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad as an ally of Kit Siang is another blow.
"Some in the DAP leadership feel that Mahathir is using DAP and Kit Siang to fulfil his personal ambitions, which is to make his son the prime minister.
"Therefore, due to Guan Eng's autocracy in Penang and Kit Siang's inconsistency on numerous issues such as the forex and BMF scandals, the Lim dynasty is waiting to crumble," he added.- Mkini
