Promote civil servants on merit, not race, says MIC

MIC's youth wing says authorities should also consider allowing non-Malays to hold high-ranking positions in the wake of a letter urging the King to appoint a Malay as Customs D-G.

PETALING JAYA: MIC Youth wants government officials to be appointed based on merit, not ethnicity.
In a statement today, the youth wing said Malaysia was a multiracial country, and that all races should stand a chance to be appointed to higher positions.
The statement comes in the wake of news yesterday of a memorandum sent to the palace, asking the Yang di-Pertuan Agong to consider appointing a Malay candidate as the new Royal Malaysian Customs D-G instead of the deputy D-G in charge of enforcement Subromaniam Tholasy.
According to the Malay Mail Online, the memo, allegedly sent by the Malaysia International Humanitarian Organisation (MHO), said Customs deputy D-G Zulkifli Yahya, who is in charge of customs and goods and services tax, would be a better candidate as he was a Malay from Kelantan and could protect the interests of Malays and Muslims.
MHO has since denied sending the memo. The palace acknowledged receiving it but refused to comment on its content.
MIC Youth said whether the memo was true or not, government officials should not be appointed based on race.
“Government officials should be appointed based on merit and experience, not on ethnicity.”
It added that the authorities should also consider allowing non-Malays to hold high-ranking positions as this would reflect the country’s diversity in race and culture.
“We are moving towards a top class nation under the leadership of Prime Minister Najib Razak. As such, it should not be seen as a hurdle for non-Malays to hold top positions in coveted government agencies.
“Our country will only progress if we start to think beyond race issues and allow the local talents and leaders of calibre to lead government agencies and government-linked companies (GLCs).
“It’s far better than allowing foreign corporate leaders to lead the corporate sector and GLCs,” it said. -FMT
