MACC remands Yapeim director, Umno politician yet to be charged

The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has obtained a five-day remand order from the a magistrate's court in Putrajaya against a senior director of Yayasan Pembangunan Ekonomi Islam Malaysia (Yapeim).
According to media reports, the 47-year-old suspect was detained under Section 409 of the Penal Code for criminal breach of trust involving a government servant or agent.
He was arrested yesterday, after his statement was recorded at the MACC headquarters in Putrajaya.
Yapeim had previously landed in the limelight, after it was accused of mismanaging a fund for orphans.
In a separate development, a Malacca Umno politician, who was expected to be charged yesterday for a multi-million ringgit corruption scandal, was not brought to court.
A report in New Straits Times stated that a magistrate's court in Malacca had issued an arrest warrant for the 56-year-old politician, but that the MACC had failed to serve it on him.
Apart from a slew of charges related to money-laundering, the daily said, the politician also faced another set of charges for criminal breach of trust, for which, if convicted, could land him in jail for up to 20 years, face a fine and whipping.
On Sunday, Malaysiakini reported that the Umno politician is close to the state leadership.

Last November, the MACC seized more than RM150 million in cash, vehicles, assets and documents from the politician as part of its investigations into money-laundering.
The items reportedly seized included RM12.6 million  in bank accounts, 56 land titles belonging to Yayasan Melaka in Sabah, State Economic Planning Unit files related to land reclamation projects, and seven vehicles, including a Toyota Vellfire and a BMW.

MACC also seized two Toyota FJ Cruiser four-wheel-drive vehicles, worth about RM200,000 each.
The man was released after posting RM100,000 bail. He was detained for 24 hours, after which he resumed his duties in the administration.
He was later suspended from administrative duties, but was appointed to a position at the Tangga Batu Umno service centre.
