NGOs moot review of 1.75m citizenships granted from 1957 to 1970

A newly-formed Malay-Muslim coalition today announced its plans to challenge the process of granting citizenship to about 1.75 million Malaysians who received the status between 1957 and 1970.
Barisan Bertindak Melayu Islam (Bertindak) spokesperson Mohd Khairul Azam Abdul Aziz said this was on grounds that the process had allegedly violated the stipulated terms under the Federal Constitution.
"Schedule 1 of the Constitution is in relation to the taking of oath for citizenship. Between 1957 until 1970, 1.75 million citizenships bypassed this process of taking the oath.
"Therefore, this gives us the space to challenge and question the granting of the citizenship, once given to the non-Malays," he told a press conference at Kelab Sultan Sulaiman in Kuala Lumpur today.
"This is a legal issue which needs to be brought to court and we want the court to decide," he said.
While reiterating that Bertindak is not out to target all Hindus or Indians, the group had  condemned Hindu Rights Action Force (Hindraf) and its chairperson P Waythamoorthy for allegedly stoking racial and religious sentiments against Muslims in Malaysia.
"The secretariat (Bertindak) in the meeting had agreed to consider few legal actions which we have been weighing and refining to be executed.

"Truthfully, legal violations were found, based on a research done. Therefore, we have been given the mandate to initiate legal action to question the granting of citizenship to non-Malays," Mohd Khairul said.
Aside from the legal challenge, Mohd Khairul said Bertindak will also be lodging police report against alleged inflammatory postings online, starting from tomorrow at the Dang Wangi police station.
Bertindak, among others, comprise groups including Perkasa, Pertubuhan Muafakat Malaysia and Muslim Consumers Association of Malaysia.- Mkini
