Penang MCA leader says penalty for heavy water users is unreasonable.
GEORGE TOWN: State MCA chairman Tan Teik Cheng says the increase in the Water Conservation Surcharge (WCS) is unreasonable.
He said the previous BN administration had only increased the water tariff once.
“I feel sad that in nine years, the price of water has gone up four times.
“Whatever excuse the chief minister is giving is unreasonable. Please do not think the rakyat is bodoh (stupid),” Tan said.
He also told Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng not to claim that NGOs were “pressuring” him to increase water prices.
Tan said he was surprised that Lim could bow to pressure from NGOs, as Lim was a “tough nut to crack”.
He spoke on the sidelines of the Penang MCA Press Nite 2017 at the Vistana Hotel here.
Earlier today, Lim said he was pressured by NGOs such as the Consumers’ Association of Penang and Water Watch to increase the water tariff to prevent water waste.
Lim had announced that Penang was number one in water usage in the country.
Penangites used the highest volume of water at 286 litres/capita/day (l/c/d) last year, compared to the national average of 209 l/c/d. Comparatively, Singapore recorded 152 l/c/d in the same year. The United Nations recommendation is 148 l/c/d.
Recently, Lim announced an increase in the penalty for Penang water wasters, in the form of the WCS.
The WCS was earlier 48sen when it was launched in 2013. Lim recently announced it would be raised to RM1 for every 1,000 litres after usage of 35,000 litres a month.
According to the Penang Water Supply Corporation, the 35,000 litres a month band comprises 25% of 504,400 domestic users. In other words, the WCS will affect 126,000 users.
However, a 60% rebate is offered to households of eight and above.
Meanwhile, Tan said Penang MCA was training its general election candidates, ensuring they were prim and proper.
He said the candidates will go on a field trip to the State Legislative Assembly sitting next month to learn the ropes.
“They will be also attending city council meetings. We want candidates who understand their jobs properly before contesting.
“They must be able to debate properly. Our party president will decide who gets to contest.” -FMT
