Hindraf chairman says those linking him to a controversial video were doing so for cheap publicity.
PETALING JAYA: Hindraf chairman P Waythamoorthy denied today that he had insulted the Malay community in a video making its rounds on social media.
“That is not me. They are trying to link me to something that I didn’t do,” Waythamoorthy told FMT when asked about the allegedly offensive video.
He claimed attempts to link him to the video were a cheap publicity stunt, one which was also malicious in nature.
The one-minute video, initially uploaded on a Facebook page of an NGO head, featured a man talking in the background and claiming the Malays do not have their own identity, which includes religion and language.
It has since been removed.
The emergence of the video comes days after the Indian rights group hit out at Perlis mufti Mohd Asri Zainul Abidin over a poem which many felt was in defence of controversial preacher Zakir Naik.
The poem also drew strong criticism as it was deemed offensive to Hindus.
Asri has apologised to Hindus who “misunderstood” his controversial poem, which he says wasn’t aimed at Hindus in general.
He clarified the poem was aimed at Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s administration, which he alleged had allowed Muslims to be killed over the slaughter of cows —animals that are held sacred by Hindus.
It was previously reported that Waythamoorthy had suggested that Asri was influenced by Naik, who was awarded the “Tokoh Maal Hijrah” award in 2013.
“Inviting Zakir Naik into Malaysia has invited great unrest in the mindset of many Malaysians.
“If Naik can corrupt the Perlis mufti to come out with such a humiliating poem openly, then Naik has succeeded in radicalising and distorting the mindset of such an ‘esteemed’ mufti,” he was quoted as saying. -FMT
