Zaid wants Dr M, Harapan to march in protest against CJ's 'extension'

Former law minister Zaid Ibrahim has called on Dr Mahathir Mohamad and Pakatan Harapan to march in protest if it is true that Putrajaya intended to extend the service of Chief Justice Md Raus Sharif ahead of the 14th general election.
“I hope Tun M (Mahathir) and other Harapan (leaders) would do a march to the Palace of Justice.
“Idea of a ‘steady hand’ to suit the PM (Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak) must not be allowed,” he had tweeted.
Contacted later, Zaid said he does not intend to organise the march, but insisted that Harapan leaders should take the lead.
"You cannot extend the chief justice's tenure. I think it shows no respect for the constitution.
"We must protest. But I cannot lead. I am not a leader. I will join the protest," he told Malaysiakini.
Zaid was responding to a news report, which claimed that Putrajaya is planning to extend the tenure of both Raus and inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar for another two years.
Khalid, however, told Malaysiakini that he has no knowledge of this.
“This is just another speculation,” he said.
According to the Malaysian Insight report, which quoted anonymous Putrajaya sources, Raus and Khalid are seen as “steady hands” to helm the judiciary and police.

Their extension, it added, would ensure “continuity” for the ruling BN federal government.
Raus, who was appointed as chief justice on April 1, has reached the age limit of 66. His tenure as a judge was also extended by six months late last year.
Khalid, meanwhile, had served in his current post since May 2013 and will reach the mandatory retirement age of 60 this September.- Mkini
