Booklet on federal government's success in Penang claims over 16,000 PR1MA housing units being built but state government says figure far from the truth.
GEORGE TOWN: A booklet spelling out the “successes” of federal government projects in Penang from 2008 to 2016 has annoyed a Penang executive councillor, who said part of the claims were far from the truth.
State Exco in charge of housing Jagdeep Singh Deo said a section of the booklet claimed 16,569 units under the 1Malaysia People’s Housing (PR1MA) were being built.
Jagdeep said this was not true as no PR1MA housing project had taken off in Penang despite approvals given by the state government.
He said the Penang government had approved two PR1MA projects in Bukit Gelugor (905 units) and Batu Ferringhi (1,248 units) in November 2016.
The state also received applications for two other PR1MA projects – one for Tasek Gelugor in Butterworth in 2015 and the other in Balik Pulau last year.
“Until today, work on the projects has not started. So, to proudly proclaim in the booklet that 16,569 units were being built is not right.
“We wish to remind the federal government not to confuse the people of Penang,” he said at a media conference in Komtar today.
Jagdeep also said PR1MA did not appear to be “bothered” about local regulations when applying to build housing in Balik Pulau.
He said on March 28 last year, PR1MA announced plans to build a 29-storey tower when the maximum height permitted was 16 storeys.
“I returned PR1MA’s application with a strict ‘no’,” he added.
Jagdeep also took a swipe at Penang MCA who recently complained that Balik Pulau was being neglected.
“We have placed limits, such as no projects in areas 76m or 250ft above sea level.
“The national allowable limit is two times higher than ours, which is 150m or 500ft above sea level.
“In Balik Pulau, we have imposed measures to regulate height and density. Can I ask MCA what they have to say about this?” he said. -FMT
