Customs Dept foils attempt to smuggle ivory at KLIA

The Royal Customs Department thwarted an attempt by a Vietnamese national to smuggle 36 kg of cut-up elephant ivory, worth  RM300,000, at the KL International Airport (KLIA)  last Friday.
KLIA Customs director Hamzah Sundang said the elephant ivory was seized from a Vietnamese man who arrived at the KLIA at 10.30 pm on board an Ethiopian Airlines flight from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.
“The suspect was carrying three bags, which when scanned, produced suspicious images.

“Following checks, 10 packets of ivory semi-products were found in the bags,” he said in a statement today.
He said the suspect had entered Malaysia twice previously, on a tourist visa and his arrival last Friday was his third visit to the country.
The suspect is now in remand for 14 days until July 28 for investigation under Section 135(1)(a) of the Customs Act for importing prohibited items.
