Kit Siang moots another RCI over Teoh Beng Hock death

DAP parliamentary leader Lim Kit Siang has proposed that another Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) be formed to probe Teoh Beng Hock's death which occurred eight years ago.
Lim said he hoped that Pakatan Harapan would implement this within 100 days after winning the next general election. He said that this proposal was not new as it was promised by Pakatan Rakyat during the 2013 election.
He said that this was necessary because no one has been prosecuted over Beng Hock's death till date, despite the first RCI in 2011 claiming that the deceased committed suicide due to aggressive interrogation tactics by three MACC officers.
"The incident involving Beng Hock is not about one person, his family or the DAP. It is about Malaysia's battle against corruption and good governance," he said.
Lim told reporters this after attending the eight anniversary memorial of Beng Hock's death in Semenyih today.
He also proposed that Harapan initiates a medal named after Beng Hock, if the coalition forms the next federal government, to honour those who contributed to the fight against corruption.
Family vows to fight on
Earlier, Beng Hock's sister Lee Lan told about 100 people who attended the memorial service that there was no closure for the family because, till date, no one has been held accountable for the incident.
"We, the Teoh family, have won the civil suit, but this is not the end.
"The MACC had admitted that Beng Hock died in their custody, and that is why we won the case. However, this civil suit does not mean that criminal proceedings have ended.
"If a person dies in custody, but there are no criminal charges to be instituted, then why should we prisons and the police force? Why do we need to retain such law enforcement and penal agencies?" she said, vowing to press on.
Among those present at the memorial service include DAP youth committee member Khoo Kim Han, who read an obituary, DAP acting chairperson Tan Kok Wai and Kulai MP Teo Nie Ching.
Still no criminal charges
Beng Hock was the political aide to Seri Kembangan assemblyperson Ean Yong Hian Wah. He was found dead at the then Selangor MACC headquarters on July 16, 2009, where he had been held overnight for interrogation.
He had fallen nine floors from their 14th-floor office. He was survived by a fiancé and a son.

The Court of Appeal had ruled in 2014 that Teoh had died of a fall that could have been accelerated by unlawful actions of persons unknown, including by MACC officers, and ordered the police to investigate.
Following the verdict, MACC agreed to pay RM600,000 to Beng Hock's family to settle a negligence suit brought by his family.
However, there are still no criminal proceedings to date. Instead, the Attorney-General's Chambers said it found no criminal elements in Beng Hock's death.- Mkini
