Anwar's lawyer rebuts Prisons Dept denial on statement

Anwar Ibrahim's lawyer has rebutted the Prison Department's denial that the Pakatan Harapan de facto leader had issued a media statement on the Nothing to Hide 2.0 fracas.
"As his lawyer, I can confirm the statement came from him," PKR lawyer Sivarasa Rasiah told Malaysiakini.
However, Sivarasa declined to go into the specifics of how Anwar had issued the statement.
The Prison Department in a statement earlier today said Anwar was in court on the day the statement was issued.
It said that Anwar was under close watch, and those who were not involved in Anwar's court proceedings were not allowed to talk to him.
It also said prisoners are not allowed to make statements without authorisation from the department and that Anwar had not been given the green light to do so.
Asked if there were concerns that the Prison Department would now be more strict with Anwar, Sivarasa replied: "Not at this point of time."
"I don't think (they will be more strict), unless there is some pressure on them from their political masters," the Subang MP said.
In the statement in question, the former opposition leader expressed concern that violence might escalate as the next general election draws closer.

Anwar also recalled how he had encountered similar experiences in the past.
Sunday's Nothing to Hide 2 forum came to an abrupt end when a riot broke out among the audience, which saw flares lit while chairs and slippers thrown in the direction of Dr Mahathir Mohamad.
Mahathir and the opposition blamed Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak and Umno for the violence.
However, Umno claimed that dissatisfaction within the opposition towards Mahathir's response on the Memali incident ignited the ruckus. - Mkini
