Chong wants Sarawak cops to explain handcuffing of aide

Bandar Kuching MP says Abdul Aziz, who was reportedly arrested over some Facebook postings, also had the right to have his lawyer with him during interrogation.
Chong-Chieng-Jen-Abdul-Aziz-IsaPETALING JAYA: Bandar Kuching MP Chong Chieng Jen has called on the Sarawak police to explain why his aide Abdul Aziz Isa Marindo was allegedly handcuffed when he presented himself at the station after being called by the police on Sept 16.
The state DAP chairman also claimed that the arresting officer did not carry out his duties professionally, and had barred him from being present when Abdul Aziz was interrogated although Chong was acting as his lawyer.
In a letter to state police commissioner Amer Awal today, Chong said Abdul Aziz had identified himself to the arresting officer while Chong introduced himself as Abdul Aziz’s lawyer.
“The arresting officer asked both of us to go outside of the police station,” he said.
“While out at the front of the said police station the arresting officer ordered Abdul Aziz to be handcuffed and brought into the police station,” he alleged.
Chong claimed that although he had made it clear that Abdul Aziz had the right to have a lawyer present, he was still not allowed to accompany his aide.
“I tried to enter the interrogation room but was prevented from doing so by another police officer,” he said.
“In the present case, I saw no police professionalism in the manner the arresting officer handled the investigation,” Chong said.
It was reported that Abdul Aziz was arrested at the One-Stop police station in Kuching for allegedly posting unpleasant remarks about Prime Minister Najib Razak on Facebook.
Chong, who is also Bukit Sentosa state assemblyman, reportedly said on Saturday that Abdul Aziz was arrested under Section 504 of the Penal Code and Section 233(1)(a) of the Communications and Multimedia Commission Act 1988.
Section 504 covers the offence of intentional insult with intent to provoke a breach of the peace while Section 233 (1)(a) covers the improper use of network facilities or network services. -FMT
