ROS reminds Bersatu of Umno's fate in 1988

The Registrar of Societies (ROS) has cited the fate which befell Umno three decades ago in emphasising the seriousness of Bersatu's situation.
Ironically, Bersatu chairperson Dr Mahathir Mohamad was the president of Umno when the backbone of the ruling coalition BN was de-registered in 1988.
"Bersatu's leadership should know that the party's constitution and the laws regarding societies are serious matters.
"This happened in 1988 when Umno was declared illegal for violating its party constitution and the Societies Act," said ROS director-general Suriyati Ibrahim at a press conference in Putrajaya.
Last week, the ROS warned that Bersatu could be deregistered if its Youth wing continued to use the Armada name.
Bersatu said that it had amended its constitution at an extraordinary general meeting (EGM) on Nov 2, 2016.
However, Suriyati, in this evening's press conference, described the EGM as a “supreme council meeting”.
“Bersatu said it held an EGM on Nov 2, 2016, but the fact is, it is only a supreme council meeting and not an EGM.
"The ROS has reviewed the meeting minutes of the 2016 Bersatu EGM and found that only 12 supreme council members were recorded to have attended,” she said.

Yesterday, the Youth wing said it would cease using the name Armada pending an approval from the ROS.
On Nov 8, Umno lawmaker Hasan Arifin, commenting on the 1988 crisis, accused Mahathir of deliberately allowing the de-registration to avoid a re-election for the top post between him and Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.
In that pivotal election, the former prime minister retained his position after defeating Tengku Razaleigh with a razor-thin majority of 43 votes.
Whereas Umno information chief Annuar Musa claimed that Mahathir prevented his political foes from joining Umno Baru which the latter formed following Umno's de-registration.
Mahathir, together with former deputy premier Muhyiddin Yassin, formed Bersatu as an alternative to Umno in their attempt to oust Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak.
Muhyiddin, who was the former Umno number two, is currently Bersatu's president while Mahathir's son Mukhriz is the deputy president.- Mkini
