Wan Saiful speculated to join Bersatu, contest in GE14

Prominent academic Wan Saiful Wan Jan has left the think-tank he co-founded and speculation is rife that he might be contesting in the coming general election.
Pakatan Harapan sources confirmed with Malaysiakini that Wan Saiful would join Bersatu, which is helmed by former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad and ex-deputy prime minister Muhyiddin Yassin.
The sources said an announcement would be made soon.
Contacted later, Bersatu strategist Rais Hussin declined to comment on the matter.
“I do not wish to comment on this. But I welcome people from all walks of life to join Bersatu and help our effort to make a change for the country,” Rais told Malaysiakini.
Sources also indicated that more than a dozen new recruits are slated to join Bersatu soon.
In a statement earlier today, Wan Saiful linked his departure from the Institute for Democracy and Economic Affairs (Ideas) with a "risk" he would soon undertake.
"Having spent the last nine years of my life to build Ideas, it is not easy for me to leave. But I see my next move as a step that I must take now, or I will regret it forever.
"When I left a relatively comfortable life in the United Kingdom in 2009 to come back and set up Ideas, I had not much more than just a passion to make a difference.
"Now is the time to take the same risk again, to bring that same passion to a wider audience," he added.
Wan Saiful, 43, was born in Alor Setar, Kedah, and has served on various domestic and international think-tanks in recent years.
He is no stranger to politics, having stood as a Conservative Party candidate for the Luton Borough Council elections in 2007 and served as a researcher for the same party between 1993 and 2009.
At the time of writing, Wan Saiful could not be reached for comment.- Mkini
