Alor Gajah MP Koh Nai Kwong has remained tight-lipped over the campaign to retain him as the candidate in the Malacca parliamentary constituency in the 14th general election.
“Sorry, no comment. Thank you for your concern, I really appreciate it,” Koh said to Malaysiakini after attending a Chinese New Year function in Rembia, Alor Gajah last night.
Koh was making was his first public appearance since Alor Gajah MCA vocally criticised a plan to replace him in the seat with Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s political secretary Wong Nai Chee.
MCA president Liow Tiong Lai had reportedly informed Koh that he would be moved to the Machap state seat, which falls within the Alor Gajah constituency, to make way for Wong.
Alor Gajah MCA responded by cancelling a scheduled party event, with division secretary Chew Chong Lin even lashing out at Liow.
The division subsequently held a gathering in Machap Baru on Thursday, which saw the hundreds of grassroots and MCA members come out in support of the incumbent Koh.
“Any other candidate (apart) from Koh will ‘telekup’ (be defeated),” one of the gathering’s participants had said.
Throughout this, Koh had not responded to the issue.
The mixed crowd at the Chinese New Year function last night was about 1,500-strong at its peak, with Koh regularly surrounded by people waiting to greet or take pictures with him.
The crowd at Dataran Keris Alor Gajah was undeterred by the occasional drizzles of rain,
With most simply moving onto the roofed stage, and others staying in the open with umbrellas.
A woman who declined to be identified said Koh had been servicing Alor Gajah for a long time and that he is doing a good job.
She added, however, that she would still throw her support behind Wong were to be fielded in Alor Gajah, but admitted he might face more difficulties contesting there compared to Koh.
Malacca Chief Minister Idris Haron, who arrived at the function almost two hours after it started, was also welcomed warmly by the crowd, many of whom lined up to greet and take pictures with him as well.
Idris also joined in a performance of a Chinese New Year song onstage, shortly before he departed around 11.30pm. -Mkini
