Ka Siong welcomes DAP’s Liew in Ayer Hitam

MCA deputy president Wee Ka Siong has been Ayer Hitam MP for three terms.

PETALING JAYA: Ayer Hitam MP Wee Ka Siong says he welcomes anyone from Pakatan Harapan (PH) to contest against him in the Johor parliamentary constituency which he has held for the last three terms.
“Whoever it is standing against me, I never underestimate anyone.
“Besides, this is a democratic country and anyone can contest if they wish to,” he said, in response to an announcement earlier today that Johor DAP chairman Liew Chin Tong will be contesting the Ayer Hitam seat in the 14th general election (GE14).
Liew is the current Kluang MP.
Previously, Johor DAP had said a candidate from Amanah might be fielded in Ayer Hitam.
Wee had also said previously that he was confident of beating the opposition’s candidate, regardless of the party he represented.
Wee, who is also MCA deputy president and Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department, had won the Ayer Hitam federal seat since 2004, each time beating a PAS candidate.
However, his majority has been slowly declining in the past three elections.
In the last general election in 2013, Wee defended the seat against former PAS member Hu Pang Chow with a 7,310 vote majority.
The Ayer Hitam constituency comprises 56% Malays, 38% Chinese and 4% Indians.
Johor MCA is targeting eight parliamentary and 15 state seat wins in the coming GE14.
At present, there are only seven MCA MPs. -FMT
