People-friendly policies a highlight at Selangor gov’t’s 10th year bash

For long-time Ampang resident Rahmah Yahya, 51, the past 10 years have brought about a lot of changes in terms of benefits gained from the present Selangor government’s policies.
The housewife, who has lived in Ampang for 30 years told Malaysiakini that she now has fewer worries about the future of her children, all of whom were also born and raised in Selangor.
"I am a Selangorian true and true," said Rahmah while seeking shelter from the storm that hit Shah Alam yesterday afternoon, as she waited to enter Stadium Malawati for the Karnival Himpunan Rakyat to commemorate the Pakatan Rakyat-Pakatan Harapan state-government's 10th year in power.
"Whatever good or bad people are saying about Selangor, I will stay here until the day I 'close my eyes'," said Rahmah, who was bussed to the venue along with other Ampang PKR members.
Among others, Rahmah cited the state government's Skim Peduli Sihat health care assistance, assistance for students to pursue their higher education, and the state's free bus service as initiatives that she had personally benefited from.
No ‘take and give’
Similarly, another Ampang PKR member Norsiah Md Janor, 63, said even retirees like her are aware of various programmes offered under Selangor's "Inisiatif Peduli Rakyat" and how it differed from the federal government's aid programmes such as BR1M.
"BR1M uses our GST money. But Selangor does not take any money from the people," said Norsiah, who revealed that her group comprising mostly women had come in four buses to the venue.
"For them (BN), whatever they give, they will take back (through taxes)," she said.
A majority of the day's attendees were dressed in the official Team Selangor T-shirts, PKR shirts or clothes in the trademark PKR light blue.
Selangor Menteri Besar Mohamed Azmin Ali arrived at approximately 4.30pm for the main event, which began with state speaker Hannah Yeoh's speech on reforms made to the state assembly.
This was followed by speeches from a line-up of state executive councillors, each of whom highlighted various initiatives implemented over the last 10 years under their respective portfolios.
Also taking the stage was PKR Wanita chief and Ampang MP Zuraida Kamaruddin, who was greeted with cries of "Hidup Ampang!" from her supporters.
Zuraida, who is also Institut Wanita Berdaya (Women Empowerment Institute) head, promoted the initiative as being Selangor's commitment towards assisting women.
She said this was in addition to its Kasih Ibu Smart Selangor (KISS) programme, which offers RM200 monthly assistance for housewives with a household income of less than RM2,000 a month.
Youth presence ‘good sign’
Azmin, as the last speaker for the day, noted that a majority of the crowd comprised youths and described it as a good sign for Selangor and Malaysia.
"I can see that youths make up more than half of the people in this stadium.
"This is a good sign, because it shows that there are still youths who are principled," he said.
"If this is the kind of spirit shown today, I am confident that Malaysia can be shaped under a new government that truly cares for the people," said Azmin.
The one-day carnival organised by volunteer group Team Selangor featured booths and exhibitions of the state government's 43 main initiatives for the people, ranging from savings schemes for newborns, to contributions for the elderly and bereavement assistance.
There were also booths selling various cottage industry products as well as the Selangor mobile library service.
S’gor PAS parties alone
Also seen at the event were DAP Sekinchan assemblyperson Ng Suee Lim and several Selangor Bersatu representatives.
Noticeably absent, however, were PAS state excos or assemblypersons, as the current Harapan-led state government has officially broken ranks with the Islamist party, following the latter cutting ties with PKR last year.
Selangor PAS instead held its own celebrationsmarking its 10th anniversary as part of the PKR-led Selangor government.
Their solo event held at the nearby Stadium JKR featured party president Abdul Hadi Awang.
During the event, the participants prayed the destruction of an "evil Pakatan" and for God to give them a chance to rule Selangor. -Mkini
