Shafie denies Warisan greedy for seats in Sabah

The Parti Warisan Sabah president says it is Parti Cinta Sabah that wants all the Kadazandusun Murut seats.

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Warisan Sabah (Warisan) president Shafie Apdal has accused fellow opposition party Parti Cinta Sabah (PCS) leaders of trying to monopolise Kadazadusun Murut (KDM) seats in the state.
Shafie was commenting on reports that PCS president Wilfred Bumburing had criticised Warisan for allegedly wanting to contest 42 out of 60 state seats in the coming election.
Bumburing was reported to have said Shafie had advised PCS to take only six state seats while Pakatan Harapan’s (PH) components could take the rest.
“What’s important is to topple BN and Umno so that the state government is administered by Sabahans and a local party,” Shafie told reporters after a gathering in Sepanggar near here today.
“That’s our priority. I’ve discussed this with him (Bumburing) but it’s not true that we will let him have only six seats. I don’t know where he got this idea.
“He told me he wanted more than 20 plus seats, especially the KDM seats, but how about Loretto (Padua Jr, Warisan’s secretary-general) and Peter (Anthony, Warisan’s vice-president).
“How about the KDM leaders in Warisan if Bumburing takes all the KDM seats?”
Shafie, who was formerly federal rural and regional development minister as well as Umno vice-president, however, said Bumburing should continue with the seat negotiations.
“We haven’t finalised the seats,” he said. “We’re still negotiating but I think he (Bumburing) is only proposing for marriage and has sent the ‘hantaran’ (gifts).
“He’s not married yet, but now he wants a divorce.
“But this is not just about seat negotiations. What’s important is we win. Bumburing got a seat when he was under PKR, but he couldn’t topple BN.”
Shafie then reiterated that Warisan needed to be cautious when working with other parties.
“It’s not that Warisan is too strong or greedy. We are not greedy. PBB (Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu) in Sarawak holds 50 of the 80 seats and their voice is loud.
“If we divide 20 seats here and 20 seats there, and when these 20 seat holders leave us, our government will collapse.
“So, the way forward for Sabah is to unite all the races and work together. A single race can’t topple BN but if we’re united under one wing, we can topple BN.
“I think PH and its components, DAP and PKR, haven’t finalised their seat negotiations either.”
Shafie also called for a halt to the accusations against him and Warisan on their sincerity as an opposition party and in working with others to form a new state government.
“I must stress again that Warisan won’t have a pact with anyone friendly to BN,” he said.
“But please don’t attack me because I’ve actually never responded (to any accusations) because what’s important is to topple BN.”
The opposition in Sabah, which consists of standalone parties and three coalitions — the national pact PH, a pact between PCS and Parti Kerjasama Anak Negeri, as well as local coalition Gabungan Sabah — have still not reached an agreement on the state seats.
This has resulted in BN and some analysts saying the opposition was still divided and this could affect their attempt to replace BN, which has been administering Sabah for more than 20 years.
Nevertheless, opposition parties are still in negotiations with Warisan, saying it is possible to cooperate with others without joining any coalition. -FMT
