Don't threaten Wan Azizah, reformasi veterans warn Azmin's 'cartel'

GE14 | With slightly more than two weeks to go before the May 9 general election, the fissures in PKR appear to be widening.
In a statement this afternoon, a group of reformasi veterans known as Otai Reformis issued a warning to PKR deputy president Azmin Ali and Wanita PKR chief Zuraida Kamaruddin.
The message was simple - “Don't threaten our president Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail”.
Although Otai Reformis secretary Shaiful Ariffin did not mention names in his statement, he had used the term “cartel” to describe the“pressure groups of the deputy president and Wanita chief.”
Contacted by Malaysiakini later, he confirmed that the message was intended for Azmin and Zuraida.
Shaiful was commenting on the alleged crisis brewing in PKR over the selection of candidates for Selangor.
On Zuraida's meeting with Wan Azizah this morning, he said the meeting was brief as the PKR president was scheduled to meet her husband Anwar Ibrahim at the Sungai Buloh prison at 10am.
"We have not received information over what transpired (during the meeting)," he told Malaysiakini.
Shaiful (photo) cited rumours about PKR members quitting the party as among the threats made against Wan Azizah.
"There was a rumour that (PKR vice-president) Tian Chua wanted to leave the party but based on his statement, that is not the case," he added.
Apart from this, Shaiful also claimed that several PKR branch leaders had threatened to boycott the party in the coming general election.
"We are strongly against such threats.
"Some branch leaders said in the WhatsApp group that they will halt the machinery when some of them don't even have a machinery," he added.
As to the dissatisfaction over candidates, Shaiful said he, too, was upset that the Perak leadership did not pick PKR Srikandi (women's youth wing) chief Siti Aishah Shaik Ismail as a candidate.
Earlier, it was reported that Azmin and those aligned with him were upset that several names proposed as candidates for Selangor were dropped.
This is said to stem from the protracted tussle between the factions of Azmin, who is also caretaker Selangor menteri besar, and PKR vice-president Rafizi Ramli.
During a press conference this evening, Tian Chua, whose name was among those reportedly struck off the list, had singled out Wan Azizah and Anwar when urging the leadership to be cautious.
“I only urge that at the last minute, our leaders must be very careful not to drop or put people in (the candidates' list) just to accommodate lobbying from various factions.
"We have a heavy burden on our shoulders and people want to see PKR fulfil the wishes of the people and not be seen as a party that accommodates factional interest.
"I am still hopeful, and I believe that our leaders Anwar and Wan Azizah have the strength to withstand pressure so that we can keep the party united to face the election,” he said. - Mkini
