SERI KEMBANGAN: An academic said a Pakatan Harapan (PH) government could start fulfilling its promise to do away with repressive laws within six months of the coalition winning the elections, adding that it should start immediately one week after polling day.

Universiti Malaya law professor Azmi Sharom said the people must push the coalition to honour its promises.

“The first six months is crucial because the spirit of change is still there and before any hanky panky can set in,” he told a forum here tonight.

He said PH should immediately move with reforming the Attorney-General’s Chambers, including separating the roles of the attorney-general and public prosecutor to prevent any abuse of power.

He said laws such as the recently passed Anti-Fake News Act, Sedition Act and the National Security Act should also be abolished.

“These laws are immediate threats to the people,” he said.

Azmi said elections were only a small part of democracy and that the people must play their part to hold political parties accountable to their promises. -FMT
